Aaron Antonovsky PhD, (December 19, 1923 – July 7, 1994) was an Israeli American sociologist and academician whose work concerned the relationship between stress, health and well-being. Antonovsky was born in the United States but emigrated to Israel in 1960 after completing his PhD at Yale University.

Aaron Antonovsky did focus on the interesting subject of how an individual can stay healthy. He developed the model of salutogenesis, which he put in contrast to pathogenesis. Despite of his criticism of the latter concept used by the medical community, it was important for him to stress, that salutogenesis was supposed to serve as an addition to and not a replacement for pathogenesis.

To the extent that he is known, it is for "a theory" that he called the sense of coherence and a term he coined: salutogenesis. Antonovsky's first book was titled "Health, Stress and Coping: new perspectives on mental and physical well-being," (1979).
